　　王明身負撫養五個子女的重任，以賣水果維生，不幸被卡車撞死。

　　遺孀古秋霞體弱多病，毫無經濟能力獨自撫養五個小孩，生活陷入困境，她的狀況經過新聞媒體報導後，立刻引起各界關注，不少人捐錢，也有很多家庭願意收養王家小孩。

　　古秋霞身處絕境又發現罹患癌症，僅有數個月的生命，為了使五個孩子日後有良好的教育及健全成長，因此費盡心思從來函中篩選出背景良好的家庭。於是，由北到南的拜訪被選定的家庭，確認他們有能力及合適撫養王家小孩，才把他們送出去。且在五個小孩有好的歸宿後，才安心離開人世。

　　在古秋霞的安排下，老大秀秀被開明的梁圳山夫婦收養；老二冬冬被送到美濃製傘的彭向容夫婦；老三彎彎被舞女周愛娜收養；老四佩佩被員林養鴨劉榜文夫婦收養；老么彬彬被企業家葉萬青夫婦替兒子葉煥元夫婦收養。

　　然而，斷不了的手足之情，五個被拆散的小孩，最後在大姐身兼母職的帶領下，爭取到重組家庭，讓姊弟五人可以再一起生活。
